Hexavalent Chromium Cr(IV) is often under identified. This is important for three reasons. First, OSHA recently lowered the permissible exposure limit (PEL) to a very low level making it federal law to have employees over-exposed. Secondly, many welders are not aware welding products containing even very small amounts of chromium (e.g., in common stainless steel) can easily create over-exposure. Third, “hexchrome” is a listed carcinogen.
Often times we can provide a short-term air sample test to show your levels are within acceptable ranges. Other times we can show you how to reduce your levels at the source or with engineering, administrative and/or personal protective equipment.
